Last week, I had the opportunity to observe and participate in what was the first large-scale active shooter training exercise ever conducted in Rabun County. The exercise took place at Rabun County Schools and brought together an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to the safety and security of our community.
This training involved Rabun County Schools personnel, Rabun County EMS, Rabun County 911 Dispatch, Rabun County Fire Services, the Georgia Department of Community Supervision, Rabun County EMA/Search and Rescue, and the Rabun County Sheriff's Office. The scenario provided participants with the opportunity to work together in a realistic environment, testing communications, coordination, and emergency response procedures.
The safety of our students, educators, first responders, and citizens is something that all of us take very seriously. While no one ever wants to face an active shooter incident, preparation and training are essential. This exercise demonstrated the commitment that exists throughout Rabun County to be ready to respond effectively should a crisis ever occur.
What made this event especially significant is that it was the first training exercise of this scale ever conducted in our county. It was truly a collaborative effort, and I am proud of the teamwork and professionalism displayed by everyone involved. The relationships built and strengthened during exercises like this are invaluable and play a critical role in emergency response.
I want to personally thank the administration, faculty, and staff of Rabun County Schools for their partnership and willingness to host this important training. I also want to thank every participating agency, responder, volunteer, and support staff member who contributed their time, effort, and expertise. The success of this exercise was the result of many people working together toward a common goal.
Rabun County is fortunate to have dedicated professionals across all of our public safety and community organizations who continually train and prepare to protect those we serve. I am grateful for their commitment and proud of what was accomplished through this joint effort.
