SAfety Tips

Simple safety tips to help you stay aware, prepared, and protected every day.

Protecting Yourself Through Awareness

Staying safe often begins with staying alert. The Rabun County Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to remain aware of their surroundings, use caution in everyday situations, and take practical steps to reduce risk at home, in public, and while traveling.

The safety information below includes guidance on suspicious traffic stops, scams and identity theft, vehicle and home security, firearm safety, and important steps to take after an assault. These tips are intended to help citizens make informed decisions and respond calmly when something feels wrong.

Officer Impersonation & What To Do

The Rabun County Sheriff’s Office suggests the following actions on how to proceed if you suspect you’re being pulled over by someone impersonating an officer.

  • Turn on your vehicle’s four-way flashers or hazard lights.
  • Turn on your car’s interior dome light if at night or roll down your window and signal that you are proceeding forward.
  • Proceed at a normal rate of speed to a well-lit, populated area.
  • Safely dial 911, inform dispatch of your location and vehicle description, and ask if an officer is attempting to stop you.
  • If dispatch advises the stop is legitimate, stop as soon as you safely can and calmly explain your actions.
  • If dispatch advises the stop is not legitimate, remain on the phone and continue driving until a legitimate officer is on the scene.

Bear in mind that dispatch may not have immediate contact with every agency operating in the area. Even so, this should not change your course of action.

Identity Theft & Financial Scam Awareness

Identity theft, credit card theft and financial scams remain major concerns. Awareness and simple prevention steps can help protect you.

Stay Alert

Scammers continue creating new ways to separate people from their money. Stay alert and think through what you are doing.

Credit Card Swapping

Check your credit card every time it is returned to you after use to confirm it has your name on it.

Protect Your Information

Be cautious when sharing personal or financial information by phone, in public, or in response to unfamiliar requests.

After an Assault

Go to a safe place and call the police. Report the crime as soon as possible, seek medical care, preserve evidence if sexually assaulted, and do not remain alone if support is available.
